Robert Burns, Scotland

Postmarked Ambleside, Westmoreland, and dated 11 May 1966.

25 January is Robert Burns' birthday, and 2009 will be the 250th anniversary of his birth, so I have chosen this card to commemorate the date.

The Tam O'Shanter Inn, top left, was the first to be licensed in Ayr, in 1749.  It was once frequented by Burns himself and features in a poem of the same name.  Burns' Cottage, top right, is in Alloway, and was built by Burns' father.  It has been restored and preserved and is one of the top tourist attractions in Scotland.  The Burn's Monument and Tea Gardens in the bottom two pictures, along with Burns' Cottage, are now incorporated into the Burns National Heritage Park.

  2. I've just spend a few days in Ambleside, Cumbria so it's interesting to read about the postmark :-) The name Westmoreland ceased to be used in 1974. Ambleside now resides in Cumbria.

  3. Wow - that would like a "vintage" postcard already! You surely have a lot of treasures and I can't wait to see what you're going to post next :)

By the way, the Mont St Michel postcard definitely came from you! It's the first from France in my collection. My husband actually saw it from a distance while he was on a cycling tour of Southern Europe - what a coincidence. Okorn charan! Merci beaucoup!
