Almost enough books

A little girl lost in a library or maybe even a bookshop.  They don't have places like this any more, where you can lose yourself among the shelves.  Years ago I visited Foyles bookshop in London which had higgledy piggledy rooms of higgledy piggledy shelves and it was a joy.  I believe they have modernised - I do hope not too much but I fear the worst.

The card was sent from Taiwan but there is no indication of the artist or any other information.

This is a post for Postcard Friendship Friday hosted on Beth Niquette's blog The Best Hearts are Crunchy.

  1. A few second hand book shops still have rooms and rooms of closely packed shelves, sometimes 12 feet high. Barter Books in Alnwick is huge.

I vaguely remember a huge second hand bookshop spread over several floors... Do you have any idea where it is? Maybe Hay on Wye? :-)

    1. Ah yes, Hay on Wye. I'd forgotten about there. Wonderful place!

  2. I love it, but I agree, I don't think we could find too many places such as this. Great card.

  3. You should come here to Portland, Oregon. Powell's is a huge independent bookstore here, and at their main store they have to give away maps so people don't get too lost among the shelves. I could spend all day there.

    1. That sounds my sort of place. You could spend a day in Foyles too. they used to have a very odd way of shelving second hand books alongside the new ones. I somehow doubt whether they still do, but it was fun.

  4. Even the large library in the town where I work has lots of space and for it's size, not nearly enough books.

  6. What a great photo! I do know where a couple of them are still today!..and one that's in St. Paul, the James J. Hill Library even has the narrow little cat walks around some of the higher areas....a very cool place...in so many ways!

  8. Higgledy Piggledy. A double dactyl. I remember it as a nursery rhyme though. :)

  9. Though you may know it as a classic example of a reduplicated compound.

    1. I remember the nursery rhyme. Reduplicated compound? Doubled duplication? It trips off the tongue, does it not? Go forth and...

  10. What a lovely postcard! Yes, bookshops are wonderful aren't they? I recently went to the local SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) bookshop where they sell all the second hand books donated by kind people. It was a bit like the picture but all the shelves are second hand too so nothing runs in a straight line. I got two books by Gerald Durrell and 'Larkrise to Candleford' by Flora Thompson.

    1. Crooked shelves make it even better, I think. I used to read Gerald Durrell's books all the time, but not for quite a while. Maybe it's time to revisit.
