Wells Cathedral, Somerset

Postmarked Taunton, Somerset and dated 28 April 1998.

West Front, Wells Cathedral

The first church on this site was built in 705 but the present cathedral dates mainly from the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. It is apparently known as the most poetic of English cathedrals, and I can see why. I think it is one of the most beautiful. It has one of the largest collections of medieval stained glass in England. There are frequent short guided tours of the windows. They say binoculars are useful but not essential!

  1. I went to a performance of the Messiah there last winter. Awesome. I'm planning to go back and have a good look around some time.

  5. The Messiah there must have been absolutely wonderful. It's years since I've been to a live performance and that wasn't in a wonderful venue like Wells. It is the most stunning place.
