Flooding in St. Mark's Square, Venice

Postmarked Venezia, dated 2 August 1971.

Venezia
Piazza S.Marco con aqua alta.
St Mark's Sqaure with high tide.

Venice is always liable to flooding during the aqua alta and St Mark's Square, being the lowest point in Venice, is the first to be flooded.  Earlier this month the worst floods for 22 years occurred when water rose 156 cm (over 5 ft).

  1. It always breaks my heart to see pictures of Venice in trouble. But I must admit, the shadows on the water do make this a particularly beautiful flooding.

  2. Agreed, it's a lovely card, and in a way it's a shame that it beautifies what is a dreadful problem.

  5. I happened to be there during the high water time and it is incredible to see first hand. They build scaffolding in the city for people to walk on above the water. It is amazing. They say it continues to sink.
