Ryoan-ji Temple, Kyoto


Postmarked Chikusa Aichi, dated 5 December 2008.

The message says
"the card shows the stone garden of Kyoan-ji Temple located in Kyoto. The style of this garden is called 'karesansui'. It was registered with UNESCO World Heritage."
The Temple was placed on the World Heritage list in 1994. The eraliest temple on the site dated from 983, but the present building was an estate for Hosokawa Katsumoto. It became a Zen temple after his death during the Onin wars. The rock garden, 30 metres by 10 metres and consisting of raked gravel and 5 boulders, is considered to be a masterpiece.
