Friendship Friday: Monet

This is a card I bought myself when I went to an exhibition of Monet's works at the National Gallery in London in 1999.
CLAUDE MONET (1840-1926) The Water Lily Pond, 1900 (detail)
Oil on canvas 90 x 92 cm Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Given in memory of Governor Alvan T. Fuller by the Fuller Foundation.

There are two reasons why I choose this for today.  The first is that I wasn't at all interested in art until I was dragged along to see the Musée d'Orsay by a friend.  One of the first pictures I saw there was a Monet - La Pie, The Magpie.  I was spellbound.  I had no idea that art in real life could look so different from reproduced art.  So it was a friend who introduced me to art and Monet in particular.  The second reason is that I went to see the London exhibition with a friend, a different friend.

  1. I, too, have not always been interested in art, but have always enjoyed Monet's work. His ability to capture colors is what attracts me.

  2. For me, that first visit sparked off a new interest. While I'm hardly an expert, I do at least now enjoy a great deal more.

  3. Oh Sheila! You've been to the Orsay in Paris! I felt the same way! To me Monet was soo doctors office and elevator music -like! But it really is bursting with so much life and energy!

  4. I love Monet - I was a late bloomer in art appreciation as well but appreciate it all the more now. Beautiful postcard!

  5. I paint as well, although I would enjoy capturing that scene on my camera.

I really enjoyed your sunset shots in the previous post too.

  6. @Marie, yes the Orsay is one of my favourites.
@MuseSwings, it's probably not until you see some in the original that you can start to appreciate it. That's what happened to me anyway.
@David, you can see something very similar in Monet's Garden, if you are ever near Paris. A beautiful place preserved as it was in Monet's day, and wher he drew his inspiration.
