Blackpool, Lancashire

Unused and undated.

Postmarked Blackpool, dated 30 April 1904.

Blackpool became a popular seaside resort when a railway line was completed, linking it to the industrial towns of the north.  The Blackpool Tower, based on the Eiffel Tower in Paris, was built between 1891 and 1894 and the Ferris Wheel in 1896.  It's easy to see how well-liked it was from the number of people on the beach and promenade in the top postcard.  It remained a popular destination until the arrival of inexpensive package holidays to mainland Europe in the 1960s.  In spite of the great decline in numbers of visitors, it remains the most popular seaside resort in the UK.  It has always been a particular favourite with visitors from Glasgow.

  1. Sheila I still have a B&W photo of me as a mere 16 year old youth on the prom at Blackpool.

I had to try and explain to my Mum why I was posing with a somewhat mature woman!

  6. Emm, I'm really quite pleased with them because my parents lived nearby. I've found out since I posted this that the Ferris wheel was demolished in 1928, so they can be dated fairly well.

  8. Wow! That is really interesting. May I ask, by the way, if you're stopping entrecard? I was thinking of stopping if I stopped having control over the adverts.

  10. @SlogBite, many thanks indeed! I feel very honoured. Not quite limitless but plenty for quite a while. :)

@Emm, yes, I'm leaving Entrecard as soon as the current ads finish running. I know they back-tracked over paying to reject ads, but they won't allow a blanket rejection of all ads for anyone who wants no commercial ads at all, nor will they say how or when ads can be rejected. But worst of all is the bullying tone used on people who disagree. I have to say now that the decision is made, I feel liberated from all that dropping. I'm right in the midst of visiting people to make sure I'm following/have them in my blogroll so that I keep contact.

  14. @Babs, I believe you, though it's years since I was there! Thanks.:)

@Eddy, I think you'd have to call it a poor copy of the Eiffel Tower! Thank you.

  16. Very interesting. I was going to say if it is/was based on the Eiffel Tower, it was a rather loose copy. :) I was once stranded part way up the Eiffel tower by a fickle tour guide.

  17. @Max, yes, a loose copy. And the surrounding area just doesn't have the same magic. You maybe ought to go back and see if the fickle tour guide is still there, waiting for your return.
