Bowen's Wharf, Newport, Rhode Island
Postmarked Providence RI, dated 7 August 2009.
Historic Bowen's Wharf
Newport , RI
This recent development on the old Newport waterfront includes fascinating shops and restaurants converted or rebuilt from the original wharfside buildings of the 1700s, when Newport was the most active port on the east coast. Today fascinating ships from around the world can be again seen tied up here as they visit Newport.
Bowen's Wharf, established in 1760, was once a thriving port, more protected than most and less likely to freeze. It suffered greatly during the revolution and fell into disrepair, but has been restored and the colonial nature of the wharves has been recreated with buildings along Bowen's Wharf.
This gorgeous card was very kindly sent to me by The Missive Maven who extolls the virtues of snail mail: old fashioned postal letter writing and all things related. Do go and visit, if you don't already know her. It's great fun and well worth the trip. :)

Looks like a great vacation destination. I know hubby would love it, he loves ships. I love old things, and historic things; so sounds like a good match.
ReplyDeleteHad to laugh though reading on the net to visit someone who likes writing letters and the old ways...bit of tongue in cheek. But, I'll hop over and look around.

stop in for a visit, the welcome mats always out.
I'm pretty sure this is the exact postcard I sent to my mother when I visited Newport a few years back. Nice one.
ReplyDeleteHey, I remember that! Good fresh lobster. :)
