Venice, the Grand Canal

Postmarked Venice (Venezia) and dated 2 August 1971.
Grand Canal - the Domes of the Salute Church.

This was sent by me to my sister on my very first visit to Venice.  It captured my heart all that time ago, and it remains one of my favourite places.  It was August, and I apparently thought it wasn't as hot as the south of France.

Venice is a particularly magical place, there is so much history, so much beauty and yet a normal life continues.  You see all the usual day to day activities, with the only exception being that they are carried out by boat rather than cars and vans - postal deliveries, refuse collection, goods deliveries.  There are some historical centres which have become over-preserved in an effort not to destroy them.  This is not one.

  1. That is so beautiful! Of course, I have my eye on Italy for next year so I'm especially tuned towards Italian scenes and photos now!

  2. Nice! I have a photo really similar to this one - mine was probably taken a couple of decades later, but apart from the colours everything looks very much the same.
