The cathedral of Brasilia

This card, looking amazingly like a modernised picture of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, is postmarked Brasilia and dated 31 October 2009.  It is, though, the Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida in Brasilia.
Night view of Brasilia's cathedral.

Brasilia as a whole is on UNESCO's World Heritage List.  It was designed and built from scratch by Lucio Costa and architect Oscar Niemeyer.  The cathedral too was designed by Oscar Niemeyerwho was also responsible for Le Havre's cultural centre, the Volcan.  I must say that the cathedral is a great deal more attractive than the Volcan which, as Beth Niquette so neatly puts it, is just like a giant tennis shoe.

Reblog this post [with Zemanta]

  1. i love Oscar Niemeyer's work...amazing to think that he's over a hundred years old and yet he still has ongoing projects!

  2. I would love to see the Cathedral from the inside. I've seen a picture of an angel hanging from the ceiling, which I liked a lot.

  3. Somewhere I have a postcard of just that (the interior plus angel). I thought I'd posted it here, but it seems not. I'll have to search for it.

  4. This building is gorgeous. I love the Liverpool Cathedral I always used to wait to see it out of the train window on the way to my burlesque lessons. Beautiful.

  5. I saw a lot of cathedrals before but this is really something different. Probably the church can use a more modern look.

Welcome to my postcard collection! I love hearing what you think of the cards - but spam WILL be deleted.
