Istanbul, not Constantinople nor Byzantium

A beautifully unusual card from Istanbul showing nine different engravings from Thomas Allom (1804-1872).  He was an architect with a wandering spirit who travelled widely through Europe and further towards the east.  In 1834 he arrived in Istanbul, then called Constantinople, and documented the architecture and everyday life of the city.

  1. That certainly is very attractive . . . how wonderful to have been there and recorded it :-)

  2. I would have loved to see Constantinople centuries ago. So much history and war. This is a great reminder of a turbulent past, however the country itself remains beautiful and inspiring.
