Battle of Britain

July 1940 marked the start of the Battle of Britain when the German Luftwaffe attempted to gain air superiority over the south of England and the Channel.  A great deal of the action was centred on the south east corner of Kent whcih became known as Hellfire Corner.

The memorial on the card, one I bought myself last year, commemorates the squadrons who took part.    Top left is the flagpole from RAF Biggin Hill.  Top right is a statue of Bob the Dog.  Bottom right is the South Kent College Memorial Wall, and bottom left is the main memorial depicting a pilot sitting at the centre of a massive three-bladed propeller, looking out over the English Channel.  Squadron badges surround the base.

"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."
~ Winston Churchill

  1. Sheila both my parents were wartime RAF (ground crew) so I always enjoy stuff about the Battle of Britain.

Despite the seriousness of the situation they told me tales when I was young about the fun they had although they also talked about the sadness they felt when pilot friends failed to return.

  2. My mother-in-law remembered watching dog fights in the skies over Kent - unimaginable now.
