All Hallows Eve

My second ever Halloween card.  It was sent to me last year but thanks to some strange misunderstanding by the post office about the address, it took months to arrive from the USA instead of the usual week or so.
From ghoulies and ghosties
And long-leggedy beasties
And things that go bump in the night,
Good Lord, deliver us!

Scottish saying
All Hallows Eve from which we get Halloween is also known as All Saints Eve.  The following day, 1 November, is All Hallows Day or All Saints Day, the day when many people in Europe make a visit to the cemetery to lay flowers or candles on graves of loved ones.  In many of these countries All Saints Day is a public holiday, and in some so to is the following day, All Souls Day.

  1. Wow--I didn't know that! That is a wonderful tradition for Nov. 1st! I love this postcard, too.

  2. Most folks here in the USA know all that but only concentrate on dressing up in costumes and having parties. The stores make mega bucks selling large quantities of bagged candy and so the story really goes. Same way with Christmas. The real story got lost somewhere along the way. Just another day for the Walmarts to get fatter.

  3. @Beth, glad you like the card. It's quite strange to see the so many people in the cemeteries at this time of year. It makes them look lovely, and of course the flower sellers love it.

@Odie, it's starting to become very commercial here too, I've noticed. Lots of things in the shops that we never used to have.

  4. I love this one! Halloween has always been one of my favourite holidays but I don't really celebrate it any more. Unfortunately, someone scared my little neighbours last year and they have all been too scared to trick or treat this year!

  5. It's cheerful, isn't it? :) What a shame about the children being scared. That really does spoil things for them.
