Santiago de Compostela
There is so much to say about Santiago de Compostela that it's almost impossible to know where to start. I'm not even going to attempt it so this will be the briefest of outlines.
Santiago means Saint James (via the Latin Sanctu Iacobu) or Saint Jaques. For 1000 years the cathedral has been, and still is, the focus of pilgrimages along routes through Europe - the Way of St James, el Camino de Santiago, le Chemin de St Jacques. Not only is the cathedral a World heritage Site, but so too are the routes taken by the pilgrims.
When I still thought I might make an attempt to explain it all, I visited a site called Camino de Santiago. That was two hours ago. From there I went to another and so it went on....

Oooh, I'm quite intrigued that a route is a World Heritage Site. Very interesting. There is just so much to see out there, it makes me realise I need to get out more!
ReplyDeleteYou are opening up the world to us and I appreciate it very much.
ReplyDelete@Emm, it's slightly. The routes are listed and some of the places along the routes are listed separately. It really is quite fascinating. I found out about it almost by accident when we made an overnight stop at one of the places on the route.
ReplyDelete@Odie, to say it's my pleasure sounds like a lame reply, but in fact it's true. I find the cards fascinating and through them, the places they represent.
