Sister Kenny Institute

Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis is one of eight that has a Sister Kenny Institute offering rehabilitative services.  Elizabeth Kenny was an Australian nurse whose work with victims of polio laid the foundation of modern physical therapy.  Now the Institute treats any short or long term disability.

I don't know why the sender chose this particular card to send to me.  She had no way of knowing that she was about to start me off on a themed collection of hospitals and medicine.  I have a grand total of two cards now. :)

  1. When I was around 8, the theaters would take a break and collect money for the Sister Kenny fund set up for polio. And the news (always shown at the movies then) showed the iron lungs. Polio was scary and quite rampant in the 1940s and early 1950s in the USA. I had a friend in middle school (called junior high then) who recovered from polio. For a while swimming pools and movie theaters were not recommended for attending them because the cause of polio was unknown. How wonderful that now an inoculation prevents that horrible disease.

  4. Sheila, what a neat card. I am sorry I have not been by to see you, but health reasons prevent me from sitting to long at my desk now. I hope all is well with you, I sure have missed you.

    God bless,
    Jodi
