"This house, situated on Conway Quay, North Wales, measures Frontage, 72 inches; depth 100 inches; height 122 inches. The lady in Welsh costume is the owner of the house."Once upon a time a 6 ft 3 inch fisherman lived in this one-up, one-down, house, the smallest house in Great Britain, until it was declared unfit for human habitation in 1900. If his height was correct, he wouldn't have been able to lie across the width of the house which is only 5 ft 11 wide. He couldn't even stand up straight because the total height for the two floors is about 10 feet. The reason it was so small is that it was built in a gap between two terraces of larger houses. Later, the houses to the left were demolished, and nowadays the house is painted red.
When I examined the card with a magnifying glass, I could see that the sign over the front door offers admission for 1d (one old penny). With inflation that has risen to £1. The sign also says that postcards can be obtained within. I would like to think that this card came from there.
This is a post for Postcard Friday, which is hosted by Beth Niquette at The Best Hearts are Crunchy.
Now that is one of the cutest stories I've heard in a while.
ReplyDeleteThis is really neat, and I appreciate you sharing this cool bit of trivia with us. Have a wonderful weekend,

You can see the house if you check out the pictures at https://picasaweb.google.com/ramblerx/Conway08#
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this story. Amazing. Most people have bathrooms bigger than that. Fun trivia.

What a hoot! Sometimes with our four kids, my house seems about that small! :)
ReplyDeleteHope they are still selling postcards inside. The women in the welsh costume really gives the scale.
ReplyDeleteI'm 1.92m. My bed is nearly bigger than this house. Happy PFF!
ReplyDeleteI once saw a postcard for the smallest POST OFFICE in the United States, or so it claimed. I don't remember what postcard postage was back when I saw it - (twenty years ago at least, in Linn's Stamp News), but you can bet it was less than it is now. Great card! And if the inside dimensions were truly 5' 11", I could sleep sideways!
ReplyDeleteToo precious! Although I don't think I could live in a house like that, even if it was in the best location! ; )
ReplyDeleteThat's hilarious and the house is adorable.
ReplyDeleteWell, this is very interesting! I can't believe someone has actually lived there. I couldn't imagine!
ReplyDeleteUrban spread at its best! I'd love to see the inside of the house. Sounds a bit too cozy - like living in an elevator or a closet.
ReplyDeleteI really found this so interesting-I wish I could see the inside!
ReplyDeleteInteresting card, but sad choice for actual living. Poverty-induced desperation? Life is full of constraints - why would you further constrain, contain and confine yourself to such a "prison cell"? :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun story and "funner" card. Certainly wouldn't take anytime to clean your house if it were that size! Cute post.
ReplyDeleteLike Rebecca, I want to go inside. Unique!
ReplyDeleteThe house is quite amazing. Unfortunately I didn't get to look around it, it was too crowded :-(
ReplyDeleteGood grief, I don't even think I could fit in that house, especially as I am getting wider and wider!
ReplyDeleteHow interesting! I have this same card, and I was looking at it last night thinking to msyelf, "How in the world do people live in such tight quarters?"
ReplyDeleteThis is a first for me .. to see one of "my" cards ...
