A museum in Brazil

The Museum of Abilo Barreto is in the south east of Brazil, in the city of Belo Horizonte.  It is built in the original part of the village, a farm called Curral del Rei, which became a village and then the city.

As well as the stamp on this card, I have several others from Brazil.

The two on the left are ones I frequently receive, small denominations to make up values.  The one on the right is to commemorate Peter Lund, a Danish palaeontologist, who worked and lived in Brazil and is considered the father of Brazilian palaeontology.  He found several caves full of bones near the small town of Lagoa Santa.  100 years later the oldest human fossil in Brazil was found there.

Chico Xavier was a very popular spiritualist in Brazil.  The stamp commemorates the centenary of his birth.  He died in 2002 aged 92.  The quotation says:
Ama sempre. E quando estiveres a ponto de descrer do poder do amor, lembra-te do Cristo
which Google tells me means:
Always love. And when you're about to discredit the power of love, remember Christ.

Finally, a beautiful blue bird, the Blue Finch, found in Bolivia and Brazil.  It becoming rare, almost endangered, because the places where it normally lives are being used for agriculture.

This is a post for Sunday Stamps, now hosted by Violet Sky at "See it on a Postcard!"

  1. Great stamps, but you will probably guess that my favourite would be that blue finch.

  3. How intersting, I like the idea of remembering a spiritualist on a stamp.

  4. What a nice variety of stamps, Peter Lund sounds an interesting character. The blue finch lives up to its name so intensely blue.
