Jardim Botânico de Curitiba

The Botanic Gardens in Curitiba were opened only in 1991 and are unsurprisingly one of the most visited sites in Curibita, the largest city in southern Brazil.  It was designed along the lines of formal French gardens but with the main art nouveau style greenhouse resembling London's Crystal Palace from the 19th century.  A second greenhouse is reserved for botanical research.

There are also tropical forest walks, a botanical museum, a garden of the senses where the visitor can experience different textures and aromas and sounds.  An exhibition hall features the works of Frans Krajcberg, a Polish artist living in Brazil who campaigns against the destruction of the Brazilian forests.  His works are all made from the remains of illegally felled or burned trees.

If it anything like as stunning in real life as this postcard is, it would be a wonderful place to visit.

  1. I always hear good things about Curitaba's downtown and the lack of cars. I would love to visit someday.

    1. It's a very environmentally aware city. I believe they recycle something like 70% of their paper.
