The Armada
The Post Office issued a series of stamps in 1988 to commemorate the attempt by the Spanish Armada to invade England and overthrow Queen Elizabeth I, in 1588.
The ships look beautiful but I would prefer not to imagine what life on board must have been like, especially under fire.
This is a post for Sunday Stamps, now hosted by Violet Sky at "See it on a Postcard!"

these ones are just FANTASTIC!! what a lovely colourful set! Yeah, i actually dont want either to imagine or god forbid, experience, life on board...i prefer to be on the safer side :)
ReplyDeleteThey are lovely stamps and I agree that life on board must have been terrible.
ReplyDeleteIf I ever see this set for sale, you know it's going in my collection!! :D
ReplyDeleteHands down - these are the best stamps I have seen this week, and I have nearly finished going through everyone's posts. You are right that life on board would have been horrific, but boy, what stunning images!! I love the red colour palette - and I think the designs would make beautiful embroidery or tapestry patterns.
ReplyDeleteI managed to get a plug in for Drake in my post but these stamps of the Armada are magnificent. I particularly like the way they have followed the voyage.
ReplyDeleteI note how conditions worsen in each stamp, as you move along in time. What great colors indeed. Thank you for joining in this week.
ReplyDeleteAll those billowing sales are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteBut, these ships do look rather 'decorative' and I would not like to be on that rowing crew!
A lovely set, very colourful. I remember being struck by the smell of gunpowder and the noise at the waxworks depiction of a battle fought at sea.
ReplyDeleteThey are very colorful. They remind me of Chinese designs.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, wonderful, exceptional. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThe ships are beautiful but the water look so scary.
ReplyDeleteMy Sunday Stamps#40: Ships
Beautifully designed stamps and they tell the story of the Armada so very well.
ReplyDeleteFiery ships. I can imagine sailing in those rough seas though...it's scary!
ReplyDeleteI like these stamps so much. Nice enough to frame!
