A Killarney motor

If the writing at the bottom left is indecipherable, it says "A Killarney Motor.  Mostly propelled by good humour".  It is signed by the artist L. Anthony who produced a number of humorous cards set in Ireland. This one is unused but dates from some time before 1907.

This is a post for Postcard Friendship Friday hosted on Beth Niquette's blog, The Best Hearts are Crunchy.

  1. Cute card, but the humor is lost on me.

  2. Well I went off and did a bit of research. A Killarney Motor is actually what is called a jaunting car which is a two-wheeled wagon drawn by a single horse. The carriage has back to back seats for up to four people. The foot-boards of the seats project out over the wheels. I guess this is pretty popular with tourists who visit Killarney. It was once the only mode of transportation in Ireland and even now, in some places where cars are prohibited, it is the only way to get around.

Our word jaunt, came from the jaunting car, meaning a short pleasure excursion, but in its earliest uses meaning to make a horse caracole or prance, hence to jolt or bump up and down.

So--I imagine the humor has to do with the bouncy ride of the Killarney Motor, otherwise known as the jaunting car! lol Bahahahahaaaa....Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

  3. Maybe you're right. I took the humour to lie in the part where it says "Mostly propelled by good humour".

    1. LOL I love the story about your Grannie. I will likely be wearing a shamrock on my lapel, no matter what. Your Grandma sounds like so much fun. (grin)
