British gardens

Four stamp postcards showing gardens of stately homes

A set of stamps was issued in 1983 to celebrate British gardens.  Not just any gardens, you'll notice, but gardens of stately homes.  They show very nicely the changing style over the years.  The only one I've visited myself is Sissinghurst.  I can recommend it as being well worth a visit.

This is a post for Sunday Stamps, in its new home at "See it on a Postcard!"

  1. These are really well done stamps. Interesting that even more formal gardens have changed over the centuries. I wonder when people started making gardens for pleasure rather than subsistence? It wouldn't surprise me if eastern countries did it first.

  2. I hadn't heard of Biddulph Grange but the other names are familiar.
We may never know if there will be a 21st C garden style. I'd be interested in seeing that change of aesthetic.

  3. These are beautfful series. I mostly favored the last one that looks like a maze :)

  4. The last one is what we would name "a French garden"! ;-)

    I like this set.

  5. Great set which I hadn't seen before. I only made to the gates of Blenheim.

  6. They were a pretty set, I do like a mooch around a garden but haven't managed to see any of these.
