Drakensberg, South Africa

Postmark illegible, dated 10 August 1981.
Solitude
The camp nestles at the foot of the Drakensberg.  Walks take visitors along beautiful routes.... and to bushman paintings.

From the message:
Fascinated with everything - Zulu dancing, sharks, snakes, dolphins, every possible wild animal.  Basuto tribes live above the snow line with only one blanket - very tough indeed.  We are in the huts below.
The Drakensberg is the highest range in southern Africa and home to a great array of biological diversity.  There are many caves and shelters in the softer sandstone, where tens of thousands of paintings have been found, showing daily life of the San people over 4,000 years.  The area was added to the UNESCO World heritage Sites in 2000, 20 years after this card was sent.

  1. The Drakensburg mountains are facinating and there is so much history in and around the area which will keep visitors happy for weeks on end. If I remember correctly the place where this photo was taken also has a golf course.

For those who are not South Africans, just bear in mine that the "sharks" and "dolphins" mentioned here is about 150km from the Drakensberg, so the comments on the postcard meant various things found in Kwa Zulu Natal as a whole.

    Great place to visit

  2. Thanks frostygirl!! I love it when people know the place featured in the postcard, and even more so if they can give extra information, just as you did. I'd really love to visit South Africa one day.

  4. It is beautiful, isn't it! And it still surprises me to see snow in Africa. Showing my ignorance. :)
