Busselton, Western Australia

Postmarked South West MC, dated 20 May 2009.
The 2km Bussleton Jetty is reputed to be the longest timber jetty in Australia.
Insets: Jetty Train, Splendid Fairy Wren, Leafy Seadragon.

The jetty wasbuilt originally because the waters in Geogrpahe Bay were too shallow for shipping to approach close to the shore.  As sand gradually accumulated by the jetty, it had to be extended periodically.  A railway line runs its length.  Once commercial shipping stopped using the jetty, it had to be maintained by the local community.  There is now an underwater observatory where wonderful sea life such as the Leafy Seadragon can be viewed.  I don't normally find sea life especially interesting but the Seadragon is beautiful!
