A wedding ring

Martin Luther married the former nun, Katharina von Bora in June 1525. Somehow, if it had ever crossed my mind to do so, I would have imagined a much more modest wedding ring for his wife.  It turns out that it's very likely that she wore the simple inner ring and that the ruby and other decorations were later additions.  A copy of the original is on display in the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum in Leipzig

  1. It is a beautiful ring but I thought the same thing when I saw it was given by Martin Luther...what elaborate ring for a man was against "excess"!

  2. Well, that is quite an elegant piece of jewelry! I wouldn't mind having a trinket like that for special occasions.
