When is a château a castle and when is it a palace or a even a grand country house (or a stately home)? At times it's hard to say, but in this case I would say that the Château at Saumur in France is a castle. I think. Maybe a palace?
It was built during the 10th century and was fortified, for me that makes it a castle. It was destroyed in the 11th century, so possibly the fortifications weren't strong enough, then rebuilt by Henry II of England in the late 12th century. I would still call it a castle but it's a very pretty castle, almost fairy-tale.

ReplyDeleteIt is so beautiful from the outside. I wonder if we would be disappointed if we saw the inside. It doesn't look like it has very many windows.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful castle! I would say it is a castle as it has a lot of the tactical requirements, including the turrets and the self-contained inner area. It is really lovely.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy to see a castle. The Loire valley is the perfect place to see some of the most beautiful castles in Europe.
