Petronas Twin Towers
"Glowing radiantly in the twilight sky, the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur is a shining symbol of Malaysia's national capital."
They were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 until 2004 when the Taipei 101 overtook them. That in its turn has been overtaken by the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. I suppose these ever taller buildings are forms of status symbols but I do wonder why.
Nevertheless, the Petronas Towers and their reflections do make for a superb postcard. An interesting piece of trivia: when I looked up some details, I was very surprised to learn that the individual towers were built by different firms. Nor did I know that Petronas is short for Petroliam Nasional Berhad, a Malaysian gas and oil company wholly owned by the government of Malaysia.

Oooh, I did not know those bits of trivia. I spent several years working in construction and development and cannot fathom a reasonable explanation for using two companies. It must have been the biggest exercise in mutual cooperation ever seen for aren't the two buildings connected by a walkway??
ReplyDeleteIt’s a striking view for sure.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful photo...one of those that make you wish you were there! thanks!
ReplyDeleteI have been fortunate to have seen this mighty Petronas Towers on the two occasions I've been to KL. On one occasion, I had an unobtrusive view of the towers from my hotel room :) It is such a source of national pride of the Malaysians and, I bet, it's arguably the most-photographed in all of Malaysia :)

The towers are beautiful all lit up. I guess being the tallest is only short lived...someone quickly replaces you in the race to be the biggest, the best, etc.
