Not just a staircase
Not just a spiral staircase, but a double spiral, the twin spiral staircase at Graz in Austria. It is in the castle complex in the north-east corner of the city walls. The staircase, originally created by Peter Parler, was built between 1499 and 1500. It isn't the only one of its type nor the oldest to be found, but it's important because of the quality if its design and detailing.
Graz is the second largest city in Austria, after Vienna, and its historic centre is a World Heritage Site.

I am amazed at the quality of construction done so very long ago.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, what an amazing staircase!
ReplyDeleteFascinating structure but spiral staircases give me vertigo!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful.
ReplyDeleteThese are gorgeous. They remind me a little bit of Gaudi, but of course he came later.
ReplyDeleteOh, from my hometown. I loved to go there with my dad - he went up one side, me on the other and then we met in the middle :) Still one of my favorite places.
ReplyDeleteMind-bending to even contemplate, let alone design!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you have to keep your wits about you when you descend!
ReplyDeleteI have to visit there. I think this might be my favourite of all of your postcards and it is in a castle! In a walled city! I truly have to visit there.
ReplyDeleteVery intricate and complicated...now, with my mobility problems, I don't think I could manage it.
