Farming
At the beginning of the 19th century Dutch classroom walls would be decorated with posters like the one shown on this postcard. the posters were instructional, to teach the children about the world around them. this one's title was "Spring in the fields".
According to the person who sent this to me, although the poster dates from 1909, it was still to be found on classroom walls in the Netherlands as late as the 1980s. The artist was Cornelius Jetses (1873-1955) who also illustrated children's books.

But it is a lovely picture, painted in quite soft colours.
ReplyDeleteIt really is a lovely picture. I'd be happy to have it as a print.
DeleteI can see how it would give them an idea of what life on the farm was like
ReplyDeleteLife before mechanisation. :)
DeleteWow what a lovely picture and what a novel idea having the classroom walls decorated with the posters like that.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great idea!
DeleteThe picture is very idyllic!
ReplyDeleteYes, very. They don't even seem to be getting dirty hands. :)
DeleteI have a "Spring in the Fields" 23" X 31" in watercolors. All the figures are outlined in black (singed by C Jetses 09) wonder if anyone knows where I can get an apprasil. This appears to be an original.
ReplyDeleteI would take it to a local auction house, or send them a good digital photo.
