In 1976 commemorative stamps were issued to illustrate British cultural traditions, all closely linked to music and, as you can see, some musical instruments. They show a Welsh Archdruid, English Morris dancing, a Scots piper, and a Welsh harpist.
Later, in 1984, one of a set of stamps about the work of the British Council included this one. The others were on the subjects of medicine, construction and language.
This is a post for Sunday Stamps, now hosted by Violet Sky at "See it on a Postcard!"
I like the little figures at the bottom of the cultural traditions stamps and how the eisteddfod ones are subtlety different, they look lovely as a set.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like there are two different sets within the cultural tradition set--kind of like killing two birds with one stone.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure why a little bit of Greece is in the background of the second stamp!
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere on the internet (So it must be true :-) that Morris dancing is making a comeback.
wonderful set, very lively and colourful as a representation of music and dance should be. would love to see morris dancing live
ReplyDeletethe designs of the 1970s are always so of their era, that it's a bit like seeing an old friend from back then :)
ReplyDeleteEven though I am of Scottish ancestry, I cannot abide the bagpipes. But these Highland and Morris dancers are fun stamps, full of energy. I have seen Morris Dancers, once on a day trip somewhere in the Cotswold we stumbled on them making merry in the village square. It was also where I had my first 'warm' ale, but I digress. Though, now that I think about it, that would have been around 1975-76!
ReplyDeleteI like a lot the first set of stamps, the way they they combine music and dance. Lovely illustrations.
ReplyDeleteI have always admired that British Council Stamp but haven't seen the others. I have the druid from the other set of four.
ReplyDeletethat last stamp looks so realistic! the first set is lovely!
