A week of castles: Day 4 - Moorish Castle, Gibraltar

Postmarked Gibraltar, dated 3 October 1979.

11 Moorish Castle, Gibraltar.

There is no knowing exactly when this castle was built, but the first known record dates from 1058.  It is made up of a number of different structures: buildings, gates, fortified walls.  Pictured here is the Tower of Homage, the highest tower of the Islamic period in the Iberian peninsula.

  1. thank you so much for sharing these with us. Each postcard you post makes me yearn to see it, to go there and enjoy it myself. But until I am able I can enjoy your cards

  2. We went to Fuengirola in Spain for our holiday and they also had a Moorish castle there that they did not know how it got there. They knew it had been sighted around 1000 but that was it. That is strange to me as so much of the history I've encountered as a South African or as an English person has dated back thousands of years and has been so detailed!
