Orange grove, Spain

Postmarked Malaga, dated 27 June 2007.

Huerta de naranjos
Orange grove
Orangehain

Seeing oranges growing on trees is a truly exotic sight to me.  I can feel the warmth on my back as I look at the card, and smell the oranges.  How wonderful to be able to go out to pick an orange just as I would an apple.

  1. Wow, that really is an unusual site unless you live there of course.

  2. This reminds me of when my daughter gave me a trip to the Costa Blanca for a special birthday. When we drove to Guadalest, There were miles of orange groves with trees closer together than this. Just the smell was wonderful.

  3. I was in Phoenix over the weekend. I should have taken pictures for you. People there have orange, lemon, and grapefruit trees in their yards. Just go outside and pick your fresh juice for breakfast. But a huge number of the actual groves in the area have been bulldozed to make room for more and more houses stacked on top of each other. Sad to see the old orange trees simply uprooted and lying in piles to be carted away to make mulch. Used to be acres and acres of neatly-rowed groves. And even in the street medians. No more. One day we will wake up and have no farmland and the people in the houses they built will wonder what to eat.

  4. @Martin, it's surprising isn't it, that although the world has shrunk, we still find something like that so interesting.

@jakill, that must have been superb. Oranges warm in the sun.

@Max, next time you're there you must take a picture. It seems such a luxury to me to have fruit like that, there for the picking. And I suppose when they've finished digging up the fruit trees, they'll be importing them from thousands of miles away. That amazes me really. I would have thought in a large country like yours, there would be plenty of room for houses without using farming land.
