Piccadilly Circus

Postmarked Chatham, dated 2 July 1918.

London - Piccadilly Circus.

Piccadilly Circus was built in 1819 to connect Regent Street with Piccadilly.  It is at the centre of theatre land and has always been a busy intersection.  The London Pavillion, now called the London Trocadero, is the large building with the flag.  The statue of Eros is at the centre of the intersection.  The first electric billboards were installed in 1910, and the Bovril sign can just be seen at the extreme left.  It wasn't until 1923 that they appeared on the London Pavillion.

  1. And it doesn't look much different today, except for the traffic.

  2. But I imagine the traffic is a huge exception! I haven't been to London other than for meetings, travelling mainly underground, for years.

  4. It is really nice to see the olden days in black and white so one can assure that things were really happened and we are a part of it.
