The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Bangkok

Unused, received 2008.

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha
Bangkok: Thailand

The Royal Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the symbol of Thailand, were built in auspiciousness of the first King Rama in Chakri Dynasty in 1782 AC.

It is a temple purpose-built to house a Buddha image carved from a large solid piece of green jasper.  According to legend, the Buddha was originally created in India, in 43 BC and was eventually moved to its current position in 1784 by way of Vientiane.  Although the statue is green jasper, it is covered with clothes made of gold.  There are three sets of these clothes which are changed with the seasons.

  3. I loved this temple. It was amazing. You know, I check in to look at your postcards every day, but it's the places I've been to -- not the ones I haven't been to yet -- that stir me. Funny....
    Thanks.

  4. @Poetic Shutterbug, lucky friend!

@Mike, I'm sure it is, but I don't see a trip to Thailand on the horizon I'm afraid.

@SueG, I agree entirely because I find the same. Not only that, I find the people who comment are most often those who know the place for some reason. It's bringing back memories that chimes with people, or it seems to be
