PFF: UNESCO WHS week: Angkor Wat

Postmarked Phnom Penn and dated 10 January 2009, and with beautiful stamps.
Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. They include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging programme to safeguard this symbolic site and its surroundings.

This card has featured before, on my first PFF, but I want to continue with my week of UNESCO sites, while at the same time "interviewing" another postcard collector.  In this case it is Sreisaat of Postcards Crossing who has kindly answered some questions for me in my "Getting to Know You" series..

  1. When did you first start collecting? I think I started collecting when my family moved to the province. I was in the third grade back then and my best friend from my old school and I exchanged letters and then cards and postcards for special occasions just to keep in touch.
  2. What made you start? As mentioned above, my family  moved back to the province and so what started as a way of communication with old friends eventually developed into a hobby (penpal writing, postcards and stamp collecting).
  3. Why do you continue with it? I saw a website dedicated to stamp collection and thought of continuing my hobby. Besides, I am old fashioned  - I'd still prefer snail mails. Also, I think it's a worthwhile pursuit and I feel it'll be cool to show my collection to my kids in the future with the hope that they will also share the same interest.
  4. Do you have any favourites or specialise in a country or theme? No particular preference at all. I always tell swappers to send me whatever they think best represents their country. Although I have to confess that my heart skips a beat faster when I receive map cards and cards showing traditional costumes.  :)
So now that you know her better, why not pop over for a visit?  And if you'd like to answer the same set of questions, please let me know.

A post for Postcard Friendship Friday.

  2. Sheila this is definitely on my places to visit list now that I live in the region.

I watched a really good NGC programme the other night regarding land mine clearance around other sites in the area.

  4. @Sharkbytes, I've only relatively recently become properly aware of them.

@Mike, I didn't know about the land mines, such a shame that war reaches in the most beautiful treasures.

@BC, how lucky! I wish I could get there too.
