The Brandaris lighthouse, the Netherlands

Postmarked Zwolle, dated 25 June 2009.

Postmarked Zwolle, dated 7 July 2009.

By complete coincidence within two weeks I received two cards from the same places showing the same lighthouse.

The Brandaris lighthouse is the oldest in the Netherlands.  The first tower was built in 1323 but it collapsed about 200 years later as a result of coastal erosion.  The present tower was built further inland in 1594, after a previous attempt to rebuild it also collapsed.  It was converted to electricity in 1907 and is now fully automatic.  There is a cemetery with many seamen's graves at its base.

It must be an interesting place then! Although I do prefer the picture from the second card.

The picture on the first postcard is fantastic, taken from an interesting angle.
