A gate in Finland

Postmarked Seinäjoki and dated 25 June 2009.

This is a picture of a traditionally built fence and gate in rural Finland.  I think it is particularly beautiful.

  1. It is beautiful - and fences can say so much - not only about the local building materials but also about how the society is organized.
In North America "wars" have been fought between those who wanted fences (farmers) and those who did not (ranchers.
In earlier pioneer times fences and other demarcation lines reflected the notion of individual land ownership (something that First Nations people didn't appreciate.
