Arizona wild deserts

This beautiful card from Erika Jean fell through my letter box the other day.  It shows a typical scene in the Saguaro National Park, Arizona.  The name of course, comes from the saguaro cactus, the tall cactus shown, but there are many other varieties to be seen.  The other one shown I think must be a barrel cactus.  Erika was out hiking a while ago and found a saguaro with 31 arms.  I think that indicates venerable old age.

The peaks in the background on either side of the cactus, are Panther Peak (left) and Safford Peak (right).

  1. Sheila what a fantastic view, the original photograph must look great. Love the composition.

  2. I've never seen one with 31 arms. Or a lonely one like this - usually they are in crowds. :)

  3. Looks like it got roughed up a bit in the mail! I think you're right about the barrel cactus :-)

  4. @Mike, it is a beautiful view, isn't it. I'm coming to like the more artistic views over the straightforward documentary ones, though I suppose each type has its place.

@Max, I haven't seen either 31 arms or singletons, so for all I know the whole thing could be photoshopped.

@Erika, I sort of like the wear and tear of the mail. It adds to life's rich pattern. :)

  5. Beautiful pink colors in the sky as well as in the desert. Sheila, you have an interesting hobby, collecting postcards, old and new, from all over the world.
