Cliffs of Moher
Possibly the single biggest tourist attraction in Ireland is a natural phenomenon, the Cliffs of Moher. Located on the edge of the Atlantic on the south western tip of Ireland, they are 214 metres high at their highest point and stretch for 8 kilometres. Not only are the cliffs themselves a wonderful sight, made up of layer upon layer of shale and sandstone, but they are home to a wide range of birds, and of course the views are fantastic!

I have read about this place--my ancesters on Dad's side came from Ireland. I have a deep longing to visit there someday...
ReplyDeleteThe music, people and the land has a great hold upon my imagination.
I love places like this, but I can't get to really enjoy the sites because I have a terrible fear of edges. It isn't really a fear of heights because I can climb up high ladders, even climb up to high cliffs, but I can't get anywhere near an edge. It used to be what prevented me from planning a trip to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. However, now I am not going to Arizona because of an insane law that targets people of Hispanic descent for "special" law enforcement notice.
ReplyDelete@Beth, I hope you do manage to visit one day.
ReplyDelete@PostMuse, only a day ago I wouldn't have known what you meant about the Arizona law, but by one of those coincidences that happen, I read a vague reference to it in another blog.
As for edges, I have some sympathy. Not so long ago I climbed to the top of a tower, only to have to sit down at the centre of the viewing area because of the "inadequate" barriers at the edge. They were chest high!
I'd love to see this place....I do have a fear of heights so I would never get close to the edge. I'd have to view things from about twenty feet back, that's for sure!
ReplyDeletepictures do not do the cliffs justice. they are beautiful. i saw them september 2008 just as the fog was rolling it, unbelieveable
ReplyDeleteCarmen, we'll sit down together. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm quite sure you're right Patty. That goes for almost any of these cards I think, apart from a select few.
