A card from 1963 showing a map of the centre of Edinburgh. I've left the scan a little larger than usual so that the details can easily be seen.
It will surely have changed in the last 50 years, not least that the
Scottish Parliament is now more or less in front of Holyrood Palace.
What every map should be, hand sized, I always like them with the buildings sketched on. Last time I went to Edinburgh the parliament wasn't even built.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely early sixties as Princes St station still exists! I can still smell the smoke there now. Or maybe the oven is still on?
ReplyDelete@Joy, agreed though I suppose you'll still find what you are looking for is right on the edge.
ReplyDelete@Adullamite, I was hoping you would know.
I've discovered that the MF Peck, signed at the bottom left of the card, died in 1974, so that does date the map itself. Apparently, however, many of her maps are still being produced and sold, especially in the south of England. I will have to go on a hunt.
sheila that's a marvelous map. more more !!
ReplyDeletePrinces St station closed in 65. Although we always called it the Caley, after the Caledonian Hotel that towers over it.
ReplyDeleteReally nice! Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteI had a very short stop in Edinburgh on my first U. K. visit - a Trafalgar "Taste of Britain" four day tour. It was in February, I believe, and quite cold when we stopped at the castle!
ReplyDeleteI loved Edinburgh when we were there, and this postcard does a good job of reminding me of the highlights.
ReplyDeletewhat a gorgeous card. this is my home city and i am so proud of it. I love the quotes on the card. thanks for sharing x
