The title of this post was all the information printed on the card but a small amount of detective work, actually almost none at all, revealed that Alamo Square is a residential district in San Francisco and that the Victorians, the houses in the foreground, are known as the Painted Ladies. Groups of Victorian houses in other cities have since become known by the same name.
Apparently this particular row is also known as Postcard Row because it features as the foreground in so many views of the city centre. You can see why, the contrast between the different styles of architecture is striking.
Great postcard, I prefer the Victorian style houses to the modern :)

ReplyDeleteBeautiful card and beautiful area. There was an ambitious artist who recently recreated the entire city of San Francisco with Jello. She reproduced this particular view quite accurately.

This postcard reminds me of the opening shot of almost every full house episode.
ReplyDeleteActually, Alamo Square is the park from which this photo is taken. The houses are known as "The Painted Ladies". It is a pretty nice park, and the neighborhood is better than it used to be, but there was a time there where you didn't want to spend too much time taking your picture!

ReplyDeleteI love the Victorian architecture in San Francisco and I would love to visit there one day. I first fell in love with the hilly roads and tall houses while watching the show Charmed.
