Birds from Southern Africa

Another beautiful card from Missus Emm, this one showing the wonderful birds that can be found there.

On the left, a guinea fowl, a beautiful bird looking very like the guinea fowl we have in the UK.  According to Wikipedia, they are indeed the same but they originated in Africa.  Also known as "pintade" in France - I know that much from menus. :)

On the left, I'm guessing that's an eagle at the top and ostriches in the middle.  The bottom picture has sent me on a long trail to try to find out what it is, and it turns out to be the lilac breasted roller bird, Coracias caudatus.  So there you have it.  Personally I think it deserves a more colourful name to go with its colourful feathers.

  3. What a gorgeous bird is that lilac-breasted roller! Odd name, wonder why it's called roller. The guinea fowl is also lovely. :)

  4. Oh no! Don't tell me people eat my favourite bird! :( It is possible the bird at the top could be a fish eagle - they have the most amazing life-affirming cry.
