La Portada de Antofagasta

From Chile, a beautiful card with interesting stamps.

The card shows a rock formation, the Gateway of Antofagasta and the cliffs nearby.  The arch and the cliffs are made up of layers of sedimentary rock, yellow sandstone and fossil shells, all laid down over millions of years.  The sea has eroded these layers, resulting in the formations that can be seen today, now declared a national monument.

The stamps showing helicopters are part of a set of six stamps commemorating the International Polar Year, issued in 2008 as far as I can tell.

This is a post for Sunday Stamps, now hosted by Violet Sky at "See it on a Postcard!"

  1. That Gateway is a geological treasure. I've not seen a Antarctica related stamp before. Twoo good stamps here.

  3. Fascinating geology. I don't think I would like to be on board an aeroplane landing in the polar regions, but I like the stamp theme.

  5. Only nature could make such a lovely formation or I say, Sculpture, which I'm sure didn't happen in 24 hours.
This is another lesson that it takes time and effort to come up with something really beautiful.

  8. Gosh, the stamps and postcard look like my mum's old girlie annuals from the 60s; they look so retro! I love rock formations like that and I loved learning about that in school.

It looks like you don't have any postcards from Cuba! Mister Emm has got it into his head that he wants to visit there so perhaps one day I can send you one.
