British film stars and directors

I didn't think I had anything film related until I found this set of cards published in 1985 showing a series of stamps representing British Films.  For some reason some have scanned better than others so my efforts (in vain) to improve that, added to the impossibility of uploading images to Blogger last night, have made me even later than usual.

1985 was declared British Film Year in an effort to encourage cinema attendance which had been declining dramatically in the years before.  It had some good success in that admissions rose to pre-1981 levels and continued to rise for another 10 years.

Looking at these pictures brings back many memories, and just seeing Peter Sellers puts a smile on my face and the Pink Panther tune in my mind.

A post for Sepia Saturday.  A click on the button will take you to the blog.

  7. I was wondering why I'd never mailed anything using these wonderful stamps when I noticed they weren't USA stamps.

  8. That’s a magnificent set. I like the David Niven one - sucha handsome suave gentleman - and a very funny author - read ‘The Moon’s a Balloon’!

  9. Very nice! I noticed the different denominations on the stamps and wonder if they came out in different years or all at once. Do you know?

    1. No, they are all for different purposes. The lowest two will be for 2nd and 1st class domestic mail, then there will also be one for mail for Europe and another for the rest of the world. the extra one I'd have to look up on a philately site, but it may be for heavier items.

  10. It is surprising to me that the film attendance kept rising for 10 years.

The Queen looks relatively unobtrusive on those stamps.

    1. I suppose it depends on the pattern how noticeable the queen is, but she is always there.

  11. Yes the Peter Sellers makes me laugh too, just remembering Inspector Clouseau. Charlie Chaplin looks as though he is finding something very funny.

  13. What a great set of stamps. Peter Sellers immediately put a smile on my face too. I see his face and I start reciting lines from the Pink Panther.

  16. Great stamps and for some reason the first one with Peter Sellers reminds me of Tom Selleck! Sorry Tom.
