Flight of the Hirondelle

I was going to stretch the theme by using the name of the yacht, l'Hirondelle or Swallow, but then I noticed there is a seaplane in the foreground.  The postcard is one from an unused booklet of Monaco cards.

The yacht, owned by Prince Albert I, was built in 1911 and sold in 1923 which dates the images relatively precisely.  There was a "Grand Prix d'Hydroaéroplanes de Monaco" held in 1912, from 24-31 March, almost exactly 100 years ago.  It would be nice to think the image dates from then.  I don't know if a single seaplane makes a Grand Prix meeting any more than a single Swallow makes a summer, but maybe it lingered on for a week or two.

A post for Sepia Saturday.  A click on the button will take you to the blog.

  5. A great place to be; unfortunately I was working while I was there but I did get to see the castle and fly in and out by helicopter.

  6. I don't think that would have been too much of a stretch, even if you hadn't noticed the seaplane! I thought it was pretty clever! I cannot believe 1912 was 100 years ago. My grandparents were born just 5-10 years later and I grew up with stories about WWII. It seems too recent to me to be 100 years already.

  7. I love your interpretation(s) of flight. I liked the last sentence of your post so much that I read it over several times.

  8. Clever! I am getting more of an urge to board a seaplane this week than ever before!

  9. Power to the theme stretchers I say. Another example of the creative and pictorial use of a theme.

  10. I had a seaplane in my post as well. Comparing the yacht and plane lets me know that was SOME YACHT!
