The flag of St George is one of the three flags that make up the Union flag, the other two being the flags of St Patrick for Ireland and the flag of St Andrew for Scotland.
This card is an artist's impression of St George's Gate in Canterbury, the only gate in Canterbury's walls that didn't date from Roman times. It dates only from about the 9th or 10th century.. It was taken down in 1801, with "deep regret" to allow a new road to be built. Bricks have been laid in the modern road surface to indicate the position and extent of the original gate.
Why these two cards? Because today is St George's Day.

ReplyDeleteIt looks like an impressive gate. I've visited Canterbury when I was very young, I can't recall any city walls.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know April 23th is St George's day. That's usefull information, since St. George is the patron saint of Amersfoort.
I was in Canterbury for only a few hours several years ago...so much to see and very little time.
