The Café de Paris in Monte Carlo is an elegant scene. You may notice that the left hand side is a little blurry and that's because it is one of 8 postcards in a booklet. I didn't want to take the booklet apart just to scan one postcard.
The Café de France is somewhat less elegant and I can't even tell you where it can be found (apart from in France). I imagine a number of towns throughout France will boast a café very much like this one.
Finally and unrelated to the previous two, a card from Italy that I've shown previously but it does seem to fit well here. It shows men hanging around in the street, some have even brought along chairs. They are in fact watching a football (soccer) match on a television set in a butcher's window. According to the text on the reverse, they are watching the semi-final of the UEFA Championship when Italy was playing the Netherlands. (Italy won.)
A post for Sepia Saturday. A click on the button will take you to the Sepia Saturday blog where you can find links to all the other people taking part.
The ubiquitous Vespa in attendance, of course.
ReplyDeleteMonte Carlo looked different when I was there; mind you not necessarily better, I did recognise the mountain though, It would be difficult to shoot a scene like that now as there is too much traffic for you to stand far enough back.
ReplyDeleteI love the picture of them watching the football match. I can still remember when TVs were rare enough to mean that people would gather around shop windows top watch big events like cup finals and the like.
ReplyDeleteI really like what they are wearing in the first photo. The ladies with umbrellas look so refined.
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful! I'm with Sharon--I love looking at the clothing people wore back then. So different than today. Happy Easter, sweet Friend!
ReplyDeleteHow strange, having to rely on the butcher for your TV entertainment.
ReplyDeleteWonder if the man in the first photo didn't want to be seen or if he turned to face the camera but the sun was in his eyes? I enjoyed these - especially the butcher shop tv watchers!
ReplyDeleteThat is so strange but funny too. These are great photos too! You sure caught some great photos to go with this theme.
ReplyDeleteI spent a lot of time in my late teens in European-style cafes in Johannesburg. It would be lovely to go to one in France or Paris! I haven't done so yet but soon... I love these postcards.
