Pre-history

I used to live not very far from the fossil laden Jurassic Coast in Dorset in the south of England, passed by it regularly, but needless to say all the good intentions of stopping for a proper look never happened.  I saw it from a distance but I have no postcards of the area at all.  Then we moved to another part of the country and lost my chance to see for myself.

The lack of postcards has now been addressed because I was delighted to receive the one above just the other day, and on it was - very aptly - one of the new issue of dinosaur stamps.  The card itself shows Ladram Bay which is in Devon rather than Dorset but just along the coast.  The rock formations are from  the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods but the whole is known as the Jurassic Coast.

I have been to the post office and bought myself the full issue of 10 stamps with the matching PHQ cards which you can see above.  They don't seem to call dinosaurs by the same names I learnt when my sons were in their dinosaur phase.  Or they're different dinosaurs.  Whichever, they do make attractive stamps and cards.

This is a post for Sunday Stamps, now hosted by Violet Sky at "See it on a Postcard!"

  1. I think one will have to be careful detaching the stamps. You might rip a dinosaur,s head off!
Thank you for joining us this week.

  2. I haven't seen these yet, a very nice set. I like that parts of the dinosaur extend beyond the edge of the stamp.

  3. The designs look great against a colored background like on the PHQ cards, but the protruding effect doesn't stand out against a white background.

  6. I definitely think we need to stay in Dorset one year during our Annual Rainy British Summer Holiday. It just looks so beautiful. This is a gorgeous postcard and I love the dinosaur stamps.

  7. Sounds like a young boy's dream, dinosaurs and stamp collecting all rolled into one, except the iPad would have to play a part somewhere in my own grandson's case.

  8. Having bought the British Auto Legends set and being stung for £8.50 as the only packs that had for sale included a minisheel of commercial vehicles as well as the cars, I decided not to get the dinosaurs when they came out - I may have to change my mind as they are so good.

  9. Great card and stamp to receive. The postcard has just answered a query discussed the other day (as a result of the stamp issue) of what the Jurassic Coast consisted of apart from being in Dorset.
