Ryman Auditorium, Nashville

Postmarked Nashville, TN, and dated 5 march 2009.
Photo: Matt Mikulla.

The message tells me that this is the Ryman Auditorium, home of the Grand Ole Opry, also known as the "Mother Church of country music".

The auditorium began life in 1892, as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, built by Thomas Ryman who was a Nashville businessman and a riverboat captain.  Later it was home to the Trevecca Nazarene University from 1911-1914.  It was used for Grand Ole Opry broadcasts from 1943 until 1974, but then fell into disrepair.  In 1994 it was restored, but audiences still find themselves sitting in pews.  It can seat 2,362 people.   Just a modest little place, then!

  3. What a wonderful old place! I remember visiting the Opry in the late '60s and hearing Roy Acuff sing Wabash Cannonball while playing with his yoyo.
