Shanghai

I was told that this card was posted from Shanghai on 3 March 2009, so I'm assuming that's what the postmark says.
Emporiums to Yu Yuan.  Photoed by Xu Zhengkui.

As far as I can tell, this area is more usually written Yuyuan.  It is apparently an area of shops and amusements surrounding  the Yuyuan Garden.  The architecture follows the southern garden style in the Ming and Qing dynasties with flying eaves, raised corners, engraved beams and painted ridge poles.  Inside, however, everything is modern.

  1. Raised corners to snag the evil spirits, so they say. I think it worked in this case. Beautiful.

  4. @Max, I didn't know that about the corners. It is beautiful, isn't it.

@jodapoet, I love the cultural aspects too. It's surprising how much you can learn from a simple hobby like collecting postcards!

@Adam, or your alter ego(s)do you think I'm stupid?
