Neuschwanstein Castle
Postmarked Briefzentrum 86, dated 27 April 2009.
Königsschloss Neuschwanstein
erbaut 1869-1886 von König Ludwig II von Bayern
The royal castle Neuschwanstein
built 1869-1886 by King Ludwig.
I was quite startled to find this place is relatively young. It was built, as the card says, by Ludwig II, and designed by a theatrical set designer rather than an architect. The style of the castle was to be medieval based on old German knights' castles, however there was nothing medieval about the technology used which was the most up-to-date of the time. It had every comfort available including central heating and telephones.
The setting of the castle is stunning, on a rugged peak, with a backdrop of mountains. It's no surprise to learn it is the most photographed building in Germany.

Hi Sheila, I first visited this castle in 1967 when I was in the British Army based in Germany. Even more spectacular when you are there, especially in the winter with snow.
ReplyDeleteThis castle looks like something out of a Disney film, amazing.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, thinking about it, it does bear an uncanny resemblance to the castle at Disneyland.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how they keep it looking so white?! Now that would be some kind of amazing upkeep!
